I was searching through my photos looking for some new subjects when I came along this photo of my mother’s father. He passed away a few years ago and I had scanned in some photos to include in the booklets at his funeral. He looks so young and handsome.
Last year my friend competed in the Sochi Olympics. I am so proud of her! Here is a drawing of a photo taken at the event. This drawing took about 3 times as long to do as any of the others.
I couldn’t resist in drawing my handsome husband, Kieran. I was still learning shading techniques, but there’s definitely progress.
I really enjoyed drawing Tom. He has such interesting features and a friendly, warm glow. I felt this drawing come to life.
My next portrait was of an old friend, Joe. After a couple more weeks of drawing I sent out requests to my friends for photos for me to draw. Joe kindly asked if I would draw this friend and brother who were on the road trip with him where this photo was taken. I look forward to being able to display these three portraits side-by-side.
This was the second portrait I did. At this point I was still learning how to use the pencils effectively. I experimented a little with colour using my beautiful derwents.
A couple of months ago I bought a set of graphite pencils. I had some vouchers to use up before I left town and the pencils cost the amount of the vouchers perfectly. Before I knew it, I was on my way to drawing realistic pencil portraits.
